The University of California, Davis offers performance enhancement counseling and consultation to registered students and student-athletes. Performance enhancement psychology promotes positive and effective mental health care to enhance performance across life domains (e.g., sport, career, personal, social, etc.). Psycho-educational material in the areas of Sport Consulting, Psychological Counseling for Student-Athletes, and Performance Enhancement Training are provided to encourage the development of effective mind and body skills.

Developing effective mind and body skills increases performance consistency, maximizes personal strengths, and improves overall performance. The opportunity to change unwanted or ineffective behavior increases with greater awareness and understanding of effective mind and body skills. In addition, seeking performance enhancement psychology services can provide a greater understanding of how participation in sport, exercise, and physical activity will enhance personal development, health, and well being throughout life.

Applied Sport Psychology Program Mission Statement

ASPP is a division of both Counseling and Psychological Services and Intercollegiate Athletics. More…

Sport Consulting and Psychological Counseling for Student-Athletes at UCD began in the Fall of 2000. The Intercollegiate Athletics Department (ICA) and CAPS have nurtured, firmly supported and promoted sport consulting and psychological counseling for student-athletes on campus. Efforts have been made to develop strong relationships with ICA, CAPS and student affairs leadership to align the psychological counseling and sport consulting for student-athletes program with campus longevity.

The sport consulting and psychological counseling staff serve as liaisons between the University CAPS and Intercollegiate Athletics Department and provide:

  • psychological counseling
  • performance enhancement skills training
  • life skills training
  • coach, athlete, and team relationship development, and
  • psycho-educational groups

ICA student-athletes and coaches have utilized this professional expertise to improve performance, deal with pressures of competition, enhance the experience of sport participation, acquire psychological assistance with injury rehabilitation, assist with an exercise program, and address personal challenges with school, athletics, and/or life.

The psychologist/sport consultant position is grounded in the professional position of a licensed psychologist with background, training and/or experience in organized athletics, exercise science, and/or sport psychology.
